After having appeared before committees of both the House of Commons and of the Senate in hearings on a Bill about youth crime, an expert witness had this to say:
“Both committees asked good questions, but there were noticeable differences. About twice as many senators attended as MPs. The senators asked questions that were more profound. They had read the briefs more carefully, as well as the proposed legislation. The senators were constantly digging information out of the witnesses. Both the MPs and the senators were aware of weaknesses in the proposed Act. The MPs were concerned about the impact on the voters. The senators were concerned about the impact on kids.”
