Recently I went to Tunisia as part of a delegation for the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association. During this travel, it was apparent that Tunisian women are considered the equals of men, and their rights have been promoted actively since the day this country received independence from France in 1956.
Tunisia, a Muslim country, has abolished polygamy, instituted pay equity, and given women access to power and education. They play a pivotal role in the economy and political system. This Muslim country defies the stereotypical Western view with respect to women’s rights.
We in Canada need to follow Tunisia’s example regarding pay equity. I believe our government is not as committed to this issue. Recent federal government budget legislation measures dealing with pay equity actually narrow options open to women in the public service.
