As a senator it gives me great pleasure to celebrate the achievements of Canadians. This week Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada are celebrating their 25th Anniversary. I am delighted that yesterday I could formally congratulate them, the National Inuit Women’s Association, from the floor of the Senate, in my mother tongue Inuktitut.
Yesterday, it was my pleasure to host Rhoda Innuksuk, President of Pauktuuit. I was touched by her observation that Canada is likely the only nation in the world to welcome the Inuktitut language within a legislative assembly. For this, I must thank my colleagues who made it possible – especially Senators Corbin and Keon - and the others who contributed a great deal to make this possible.
Speaking my language is very important to me, and my people because it keeps us connected to our history and our ancestors. By speaking Inuktitut in the Senate Chamber I am reinforcing the value of our language to the young Inuit, and I am also making the message accessible to those who don’t speak English or French yet.
In Nunavik my home region, all school children learn Inuktitut first. Ours is a vibrant language, and I am proud to share it!
