Statement made on 01 December 2010 by Senator William Rompkey (retired)
Hon. Bill Rompkey:
Honourable senators, there is an immediate opportunity for the government to invest in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and in green energy if it were to assist with the development of the Lower Churchill project, which will be of benefit to all of the Atlantic provinces, including the province that Senator Comeau comes from. Actually, it will be a benefit to the whole of Canada. The construction industry is spread throughout Central Canada. It will have a great deal of interest and input into that.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has asked for something like $327 million from the Government of Canada. If the minister was prepared to cut the cheque today and to go to St. John's and make the presentation, the leader would make all four Atlantic provinces very happy.
