Statement made on 10 February 2011 by Senator Catherine Callbeck

Hon. Catherine S. Callbeck:

Honourable senators, my question is to the Leader of the Government in the Senate. On Tuesday, I asked the leader why the federal government disbanded the Sodium Working Group before the group completed its mandate. At that time, the leader indicated there was a significant overlap between the working group and the Food Regulatory Advisory Committee, which is the group that the government has now charged with implementing and monitoring the sodium reduction strategy.

I have checked into this matter and there is not a significant overlap. In fact, there is very little overlap between the two groups.

The Sodium Working Group is made up of experts in their field. They started the initiative. They had the mandate to develop, implement and monitor the strategy. They have already developed it, so why will the government not let them complete their mandate?
