Statement made on 07 June 2011 by Senator Catherine Callbeck

Hon. Catherine S. Callbeck:

Honourable senators, my question is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. Last year, the federal government indicated its intention to divest itself of almost 1,000 surplus lighthouses. Under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act, these properties can be transferred to new owners, such as community organizations. There is a lot of interest in my province, and I assume that there is interest in other provinces, in taking over some of these surplus lighthouses. However, there are concerns about the cost of repairing and maintaining these lighthouses. I have attempted several times to find out if there is any funding available. My question is: Is there any funding available to assist community groups that are interested in repairing and preserving these heritage lighthouses?
