Statement made on 06 October 2011 by Senator Grant Mitchell

Hon. Grant Mitchell:

Honourable senators, the government has finally admitted — in fact, I find myself in uncharted territory here — what many of us have been saying for a number of years and that is that they simply do not know how to balance a budget. The Conservatives have not balanced an unbalanced budget since 1889 and now they have clearly and utterly admitted that they cannot do it, because they are spending $20 million to hire an outside accounting firm to tell them how to do it.

Why do they not just ask Paul Martin to balance the budget? He has done it before and cleaned up their messes. He has a proven track record of doing that and he would probably do it for free.
