Statement made on 26 April 2012 by Senator Terry Mercer
Hon. Terry M. Mercer:
Honourable senators, it seems to me that the government would be wise to read the report of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications entitled Plan for a Digital Canada. We were shocked to find out how poorly Canadians are served across the country. Forty-six per cent of low-income people do not have access.
The Leader of the Government in the Senate talks about them using hand-held devices, iPads, or whatever devices she may be referring to. The issue is that they may not even have those devices; and if they do, they may not be able to pay for the services.
{...}
When will the government sit back and think that maybe, just this one time, it has made a mistake and that it is time to say, "We will keep those sites open so we can service those people across the country who need this service the most of all"?
