Statement made on 26 April 2012 by Senator Terry Mercer

Hon. Terry M. Mercer:

Honourable senators, it seems to me that the government would be wise to read the report of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications entitled Plan for a Digital Canada. We were shocked to find out how poorly Canadians are served across the country. Forty-six per cent of low-income people do not have access.

The Leader of the Government in the Senate talks about them using hand-held devices, iPads, or whatever devices she may be referring to. The issue is that they may not even have those devices; and if they do, they may not be able to pay for the services.

{...}

When will the government sit back and think that maybe, just this one time, it has made a mistake and that it is time to say, "We will keep those sites open so we can service those people across the country who need this service the most of all"?

9 May, 2013 | By Senator Joseph Day | I know that there is a commitment by the government to change the rules going forward, but my concern is the $3.1 billion. To put all minds at ease, could the leader tell honourable senators what steps the government is planning to take to look into those boxes in the basement to determine what happened to the $3.1 billion?

9 May, 2013 | By Senator Wilfred Moore | Can the leader explain to Canadians how the Harper government can justify such an utter waste of their money, all the while telling Canadians to reign in their own spending?

Results of the National Household Survey

9 May, 2013 | By Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette | The government's current policies are jeopardizing Canada's economy. Do history and science have no relevance if they do not correspond to the Prime Minister's ideology, or does the government believe in scientific proof?
