Statement made on 30 May 2006 by Senator Claudette Tardif
Hon. Claudette Tardif:
Honourable senators, the government recently released its Budget 2006 along with a document entitled italic; Restoring Fiscal Balance in Canada, which talks about post-secondary education. The budget mentions that in today's knowledge-based economy, a more educated and skilled labour force is key to Canada's competitiveness in the world. Government investments in education and training are therefore critical to productivity and economic growth.
Given the intensive support that other countries provide for research and development as well as commercialization, and given Canada's current productivity gap, why is the government not allocating more funding to this priority and showing more leadership on this issue?
