Statement made on 31 March 2009 by Senator Art Eggleton
Hon. Art Eggleton:
Honourable senators, yesterday marked the two-year anniversary of the Government of Canada signing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The convention was the first comprehensive human rights treaty of the 21st century and marked a paradigm shift in attitudes and approaches toward persons with disabilities. However, after two years the government has yet to bring forth legislation to ratify it.
I understand that the government is currently in consultations with the provinces to ensure that the provincial legislation is in line with the convention. Could the Leader of the Government in the Senate please provide an update on the progress of the consultations?
