Statement made on 23 April 2009 by Senator Claudette Tardif

Hon. Claudette Tardif (Deputy Leader of the Opposition):

Honourable senators, my question is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. The French language is absent not only from a British Columbia tourism website, but also from the official website, destination2010.ca, created by the Canadian Tourism Commission, which is involved in tourism promotion for the Vancouver Olympic Games.

The Canadian Tourism Commission is a federal institution subject to the Official Languages Act. This is not merely symbolic, but rather an essential part of our Canadian values, one that federal institutions must respect. Accordingly, the funds distributed by the Commission must promote and respect the act.

What does the Conservative government intend to do to correct this situation?
