Statement made on 16 June 2009 by Senator Mobina Jaffer

Hon. Mobina S.B. Jaffer:

Honourable senators, the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been called a war against women. During this civil war, tens of thousands of women have been victims of rape as a weapon of war on a scale the world has never seen. Our Canadian mining companies are working in the Congo. We all benefit from the mining of coltan used for phones and BlackBerrys. I ask the Leader of the Government in the Senate to tell us what the Canadian government is doing to revisit the decision of the United Nations that has asked us to play a leadership role in stabilizing the situation in the Congo?
