Statement made on 21 October 2009 by Senator Catherine Callbeck

Hon. Catherine S. Callbeck:

Honourable senators, my question is to the Leader of the Government in the Senate.

Last month, when the G8 had its first international conference on violence against women, the Government of Canada was not represented.

Some Hon. Senators: Shame.

Senator Callbeck: In fact, the only person from Canada in attendance was opposition MP Irwin Cotler, who was invited as a special speaker.

Does the federal government not recognize that violence against women is a serious issue in this country?

She has certain responsibilities and certain standards that her colleagues expect her to maintain.

Payment of Funds—Twenty-second Report of Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration Committee
