Statement made on 24 November 2009 by Senator Jerahmiel Grafstein (retired)
Hon. Jerahmiel S. Grafstein:
Honourable senators, I understand that today marks the twentieth anniversary of a unanimous resolution passed in the other place to reduce poverty in Canada by 2000. The most recent data from Statistics Canada, namely for 2007, indicate that one out of nine children live below the poverty line. In Toronto, it is worse.
Could the Leader of the Government in the Senate give us some accurate figures and tell us how many children are living below the poverty line this year compared to last year?
