Statement made on 02 December 2009 by Senator Percy Downe
Hon. Percy E. Downe:
Honourable senators, the leader would be aware that the British government is proposing to change the Act of Settlement by removing restrictions that bar members of the Royal Family from marrying Roman Catholics. At present, members of the Royal Family are forbidden by the Act of Settlement from converting to the Roman Catholic religion, or marrying someone from the Catholic religion, unless they agree to be removed from the order of succession.
These changes would directly impact the future head of state of Canada. Is the Canadian government in favour of these proposed changes?
