Statement made on 09 March 2010 by Senator Claudette Tardif

Hon. Claudette Tardif (Deputy Leader of the Opposition):

On January 27, 2010, the honourable leader's government announced that it would call the attention of the G8 and G20 countries to maternal and child health in some of the poorest countries in the world. It reiterated this commitment in the Speech from the Throne.

However, the government has also announced that it is freezing international assistance budgets. How does the government plan to improve maternal and child health in developing countries by freezing budgets and without cutting the aid programs in place?

First Nations Elections Bill—Second Reading

2 Feb, 2012 | By Senator Nick Sibbeston | Honourable senators, I am pleased to speak today on Bill C-6, the First Nations election act. I can safely say that this bill is an improvement on the current situation and is broadly supported by my colleagues on this side of the chamber. I would not go as far as Senator Patterson, the sponsor of the bill, and call it a milestone achievement, but it is a vast improvement over what is.

2 Feb, 2012 | By Senator Maria Chaput | Since bilingualism remains a priority for the government, can the Leader of the Government in the Senate explain what directives have been sent to the federal departments in terms of more affordable resources that are available to employees who want to learn either official language?

Second-language Training—Linguistic Duality

2 Feb, 2012 | By Senator Marie-P. Poulin (Charette) | How can the minister assure us that this gap will disappear as soon as possible when we keep seeing decisions being made that fundamentally do not seem to recognize that French is just as important as English in Canada?
