Statement made on 11 March 2010 by Senator Terry Mercer

Hon. Terry M. Mercer:

Honourable senators, my question is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. As she knows, volunteers are the life support for many organizations across Canada and indeed around the world. In fact, the philanthropic sector draws on over two billion volunteer hours, which is the equivalent of over one million full-time jobs in Canada. While this is huge, there is a current downward trend in the number of people volunteering.

Can the minister tell us what was contained specifically in the budget that would support or encourage volunteerism in Canada?

First Nations Elections Bill—Second Reading

2 Feb, 2012 | By Senator Nick Sibbeston | Honourable senators, I am pleased to speak today on Bill C-6, the First Nations election act. I can safely say that this bill is an improvement on the current situation and is broadly supported by my colleagues on this side of the chamber. I would not go as far as Senator Patterson, the sponsor of the bill, and call it a milestone achievement, but it is a vast improvement over what is.

2 Feb, 2012 | By Senator Maria Chaput | Since bilingualism remains a priority for the government, can the Leader of the Government in the Senate explain what directives have been sent to the federal departments in terms of more affordable resources that are available to employees who want to learn either official language?

Second-language Training—Linguistic Duality

2 Feb, 2012 | By Senator Marie-P. Poulin (Charette) | How can the minister assure us that this gap will disappear as soon as possible when we keep seeing decisions being made that fundamentally do not seem to recognize that French is just as important as English in Canada?
