Statement made on 21 April 2010 by Senator Roméo Dallaire

Hon. Roméo Antonius Dallaire:

Honourable senators, in 2005, I was serving as the Prime Minister's representative in Darfur, where Canada wanted to play a leadership role in trying to resolve an ethnic conflict that had degenerated into a genocide that is still going on today.

I recently received some letters from soldiers from South Africa who are serving in Darfur and are concerned about the lack of security there, to the point of wondering if the country is going to degenerate into a state of ethnic conflict, as has happened in other areas of the world.

At this time, fervent extremist views can be heard on the radio in Darfur. Will the government recognize the urgency of the situation and show greater interest in trying to prevent a catastrophe, as Brian Mulroney so generously did for the advancement of the anti-apartheid movement?
