Statement made on 22 April 2010 by Senator Lucie Pépin (retired)
Hon. Lucie Pépin:
Honourable senators, my question is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. The Government of Canada officially apologized to former students of Indian residential schools, and we were glad to see this recognition of the injustices and abuses these victims had endured.
But we were disappointed to learn in committee that the cancellation of funding for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation still stands. This foundation provided healing services for the survivors, their families and their communities.
Could the leader tell us whether the federal government plans to restore the funding for this foundation, which was doing a very good job of helping Aboriginal victims get over the trauma they suffered in the residential schools?
