I am in line with the strategy in Afghanistan. It is a correct strategy to defend and support emerging democracies, but I am having more and more trouble with the tactics of how we are going about it.

Swimming across an ocean takes more than jumping off of a pier. The same can be said of building stable democracies in areas fraught with war, instability, and disregard for human rights. We believe in the resiliency of a Canadian political system devoted to the promotion and preservation of democratic values at home and abroad. The mission in Afghanistan is putting us to the test.
As part of the Official Opposition in Parliament, Liberal senators support the tireless and brave efforts of the Canadian Forces who are carrying out a very dangerous mission. While our support for the troops is unwavering, we see an important role for Liberal senators to question and counsel government on the direction it is taking in Afghanistan.
To achieve our goals in Afghanistan, Canada’s mission must be clearly articulated, understood and supported and take into account the work of our international partners and allies. We believe that a stronger and more peaceful Afghanistan requires a shift for Canada from a combat role to one of training and reconstruction. Operationally, we see an important role for Liberal senators to question government and hold it accountable for the deadlines and goals it sets.
