OTTAWA (October 1st, 2010) – Senator David Tkachuk, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration, and Senator George Furey, Deputy Chair, announced today that Mrs. Sheila Fraser, Auditor General for Canada, has been invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, October 7, 2010.
The Auditor General’s appearance before the Internal Economy Committee meeting on October 7, 2010 will be open to the public. The meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m., in Room 160-S.
The Internal Economy Committee is responsible for overseeing administrative and budgetary issues for the Senate, including committee budgets and the office, travel and accommodation expenses of individual Senators and Senate Administration.
On Thursday, June 17, 2010, the Committee approved the first-ever audited statement of financial position of the Senate of Canada. The audit was conducted in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards by the professional services firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers. It resulted in an unqualified opinion that the statement of financial position presents fairly, in all material respects, the asset, liability and equity accounts of the Senate of Canada as at March 31, 2009. The Senate of Canada also engages outside service providers to conduct internal audits in accordance with its multiyear, risk-based plan.
The Committee will discuss inviting the Auditor General to conduct a performance audit of the Senate Administration. This would make it the second performance audit by the Office of the Auditor General that the Senate will have undergone. On November 8, 1989, the Senate adopted the Twenty-Seventh Report of the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration recommending that the Senate agree to the request from the Auditor General to perform a comprehensive audit of the institution. The Auditor General submitted his Report in March 1991.
