@SCEENR_SAYS: LET’S TALK ENERGY

There are a lot of conversations going on everyday about our future: the future of our country, the future of our environment, the future of our jobs.

SCEENR believes that one of the most important conversations our country needs to have right now is the conversation about developing a Canadian clean energy strategy.

It’s a conversation about working together for the prosperity of all Canadians.

It’s a conversation about taking responsibility to address climate change.

It’s a conversation between SCEENR and all Canadians.

We are lucky to live in a country with abundant natural resources. So we have a responsibility to future generations to ensure our decisions and actions today are sustainable.

We must ensure sustainability in what we extract, develop, process, transmit, market and use.

Improving the sustainability of Canada’s energy systems increases productivity and the standard of living for all Canadians. Through determination, innovation and collaboration we can find long-lasting solutions.

SCEENR believes working together makes us better.

@SCEENR_SAYS: “What do you think, Canada?”

SCEENR is a group of Canadian Senators who form the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources. They are Canadians who come from across the country and bring their own unique regional voices to the discussion. SCEENR is committed to starting a national conversation on what Canada’s sustainable energy future looks like.

What is SCEENR currently working on?

SCEENR is engaged in a long-term study of Canada’s sustainable energy future. Witnesses are invited by SCEENR to testify before the committee and share their viewpoints. Information gathered during public meetings becomes part of the public record. Transcripts of previous meetings can be found on the committee website. Most meetings are also televised and the webcasts can be watched live online. Formal presentations to the committee become the substance of future reports and help members of SCEENR formulate recommendations for the Government. SCEENR reports are tabled in the Senate Chamber and are available online.

“Our committee is conducting a long-term study on Canada’s sustainable energy future and our new study website is geared at getting Canadians involved in the process. We believe Canada needs a national conversation and we are encouraging people of all ages, from all across Canada to visit our site, learn about our study and to share their thoughts with us,” said Senator David Angus, chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources. “Improving the sustainability of Canada’s energy systems increases productivity and the standard of living for all Canadians. Many of the jobs of tomorrow will be in clean technology industries and Canadians must be part of this important discussion.”

“Some have suggested that climate change is among the greatest challenges the world has ever known. We believe that challenges are best faced and resolved when everyone works together. We want Canadians to visit our study website and let us know what they think about Canada’s sustainable energy future,” said Senator Grant Mitchell, deputy-chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources. “We are committed to starting a conversation with Canadians. That’s why we set up a Twitter account, launched this special website, and are actively encouraging Canadians to share their ideas with us by posting comments, sending emails or writing letters.”
