Senator Downe Elected Vice-Chair of Senate Standing Committee On Foreign Affairs and International Trade

Charlottetown Senator Percy Downe has been elected as Vice-Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade has been in existence since 1938, with a mandate to examine legislation and matters relating to foreign and Commonwealth relations, including: treaties and international agreements; external trade; foreign aid; and territorial and offshore matters.

In addition to reviewing various legislation pertaining to Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the committee has recently been authorized by the Senate to examine and report on the rise of emerging economies and the implications for Canadian policy.

Prior to joining the Senate of Canada, Downe served as Chief of Staff to the 20th Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien.
