OTTAWA — Senator James S. Cowan, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, made the following statement today following the death of Senator Fred Dickson:

“It was with great sadness that I learned this morning of the passing of my long time friend and Senate colleague, the Hon. Fred Dickson.

Senator Dickson was a man of tremendous integrity with an outstanding record of service to a wide variety of causes.

Even as his illness progressed, he courageously continued to play an active role in the Senate and the affairs of the nation. He worked tirelessly in representing the province of Nova Scotia in Ottawa and served his fellow Nova Scotians with dedication and pride.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Kay and their family.”
