Mobina Jaffer

The Hon. Mobina S.B. Jaffer, Q.C., LL.B. Senator Mobina Jaffer, named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2005, was appointed to the Senate by the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien in 2001. She represents the province of British Columbia.

Ottawa, September 17, 2009 – The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications has elected the Honourable Senator Dennis Dawson (Lauzon – Quebec) Chair of the committee.  The Honourable Senator Janis G. Johnson (Manitoba) is Deputy Chair.

The other committee members are:

Ethel M. Cochrane (Newfoundland and Labrador); Francis Fox, P.C. (Victoria – Quebec); Leo Housakos (Wellington – Quebec); Terry M. Mercer (Northend Halifax – Nova Scotia); Pana Merchant (Saskatchewan); John D. Wallace (New Brunswick); and Rod A. A. Zimmer (Manitoba).

The committee currently has an order of reference from the Senate to study emerging issues related to its communications mandate and to report on the wireless sector, including issues such as access to high-speed Internet, the supply of bandwidth, the nation-building role of wireless, the pace of the adoption of innovations, the financial aspects associated with possible changes to the sector, and Canada's development of the sector in comparison to the performance in other countries.

•  transport and communications by land, air, water, and space, be this by radio, telephone, telegraph, wire, cable, microwave, wireless, television, satellite, broadcasting, post, or any other means, method or form;
•  tourist traffic;
•  common carriers; and
•  navigation, shipping and navigable waters.
