Meet Senator

James Cowan

The Hon. James  Cowan, Q.C., B.A., LL.B., LL.M., LL.D. Senator James Cowan has greatly influenced the educational and legal communities of Nova Scotia. He was appointed to the Senate on March 24, 2005 by the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin.

The Hon. Willie Adams


The Honourable Willie Adams retired on June 22, 2009.


Appointed to the Senate by the late former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Senator Willie Adams represents the Territory of Nunavut, an area that was  part of the Northwest Territories at the time of his appointment. He has served in the Senate of Canada since April 5, 1977.

He is currently a Member of the following Senate Committees: Fisheries and Oceans; and, Transport and Communications.

An electrician and businessman by trade, his entrepreneurial ventures have included serving as owner of Kudlik Electric Ltd., Kudlik Construction Ltd., Polar Bear Cave Investments and Nanuq Inn at Rankin Inlet (N.W.T.), as well as Umingmak Expediting Ltd. in Ottawa.

In addition to his role in the Senate of Canada, Senator Adams’ career in public service also included membership in the Northwest Territories Council from 1970 to 1974.

Senator Adams is married, and a father of ten children: Mary Jean, Jesse, Harry, David (deceased, September 1983), Jimmy, Christine, Willy, Lizzie, Victoria, and Isaac.

Born in Fort Chimo, Quebec on June 22, 1934, Senator Adams was educated at the Anglican Mission Schools in Fort Chimo.
