Meet Senator

Pierre De Bané

The Hon. Pierre  De Bané, P.C., Q.C., B.A., LL.L., DOC.SC.ADM. (Hon.) A lawyer by trade, Senator Pierre De Bané was appointed to the Senate on June 29, 1984, by the late former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He represents the province of Quebec and the Senatorial Division of De la Vallière.

Appointed to the Senate by the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien, Senator Joan Cook represents the province of Newfoundland, now known as Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Senatorial Division of Newfoundland. She has served in the Senate of Canada since March 6, 1998.

She is currently a Member of the following Senate Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, for which she is also Deputy-Chair and a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. She has been involved with Parliamentary groups, including the Canada-Belgium Interparliamentary Group, the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association, and the Canada-Japan Interparliamentary Group. Her areas of interest and specialization include health care for seniors, and children’s issues.

Senator Cook is a businesswoman by trade. Her business experience includes serving as Vice President of Cook and Jones Motors, a family-owned automobile dealership, as an Executive with CJON Radio and TV, and with Robert Simpson Eastern Ltd. of Halifax, and also St. John’s.

Her activities in the community include serving as: Chair of numerous fundraising activities for the Newfoundland branch of the Canadian Cancer Society; President of the Salvation Army Senior Citizens Home; and, Board Member with the United Church Food Aid Centre.

She is a recipient of the Canada 125 Medal, and holds National Life Memberships with the Girl Guides of Canada and the United Church of Canada.

Educated in the school systems of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, she was born in English Harbour West, Newfoundland on October 6, 1934. Senator Cook is a widow, and the mother of two children: Diane and Jean.
